The Chilean automotive market is characterized by its wide variety of vehicle origins, driven by a free trade policy that has enabled agreements with multiple economies. More than 30 countries currently have a presence in the local market, leading to more competitive prices and greater affordability for consumers. At Rutamotor, we have closely followed this evolution. By the end of 2023, we analyzed the distribution of vehicle origins and highlighted a decline in China’s market share, which had dropped to 35.3%. However, in 2024, this trend dramatically reversed, reaching a record-high percentage of 39.6%, according to the National Automotive Association of Chile. In simple terms, this means that four out of every ten vehicles sold in Chile are manufactured in China.
China’s Dominance in the Chilean Automotive Market
In 2024, China solidified its position as the leading supplier of light and medium-sized vehicles in the Chilean market. A staggering 39.6% of registered units were manufactured in China, while 30.7% of these were from Chinese-headquartered brands. The difference in these figures stems from the presence of non-Chinese manufacturers that assemble or import their models from China, further strengthening the country’s dominance in the sector.
Although the 39.6% market share represents a historic high in percentage terms, it does not surpass the highest volume of vehicles recorded. The peak volume was reached in 2022, the most successful year for the industry, when nearly 170,000 units from China were sold in Chile.
India’s Role in the Market
India secured the second spot among vehicle origin countries, accounting for 10.2% of total registered units from January to December 2024. However, unlike China, India’s impact as a brand origin remains minimal, representing just 0.3% of the market, with Mahindra being the only significant brand in this category. One of the most prominent automakers utilizing Indian manufacturing is Suzuki, which produces models such as the Alto, Baleno, Celerio, Swift, Dzire, Grand Vitara, Fronx, S-Presso, and the five-door Jimny.

The Chilean automotive market continues to evolve, with China playing an increasingly significant role in vehicle supply. While India also maintains a presence, its influence remains marginal compared to China’s overwhelming dominance. With a strong free trade policy and a diverse range of vehicle origins, Chile offers consumers competitive pricing and a broad selection of automobiles. The trends observed in 2024 highlight the growing importance of Chinese manufacturing in shaping the future of the industry.
