Condorito Inclusivo: Bringing Chile’s Iconic Comic to the Visually Impaired Community

/

Seventy-six years after its debut, Condorito continues to make history with “Condorito Inclusivo,” a pioneering project in Chile that adapts the iconic national comic into Braille and other accessible formats for blind individuals, those with visual impairments, and neurodivergent readers.

This initiative is led by the Centro de Cartografía Táctil (CECAT) of the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTEM) in collaboration with the Servicio Nacional de la Discapacidad (SENADIS).

The First Accessible Comic in Chile

The collection stands out as the first accessible comic created in Chile. Its first phase was launched in September 2019, featuring six magazines dedicated to individual characters from the saga. The second phase was completed in September 2024, expanding the collection with additional characters and stories.

This special adaptation of Condorito includes Braille text and macrotipos (large-print typography) to facilitate reading for people with visual impairments. Additionally, the project incorporates tactile illustrations, allowing readers to experience the characters and their world through touch. Each volume includes embossed sheets that represent figures and scenes from the comic. For instance, in the first edition, readers can explore the shape of a condor, enabling them to understand Condorito’s appearance in a tangible way.

Furthermore, the publications use specialized materials to ensure the durability and legibility of the Braille text, providing a high-quality reading experience.

A Significant Cultural Impact

The creators of “Condorito Inclusivo” highlight its impact on the community, as it allows visually impaired and neurodivergent individuals to engage with the beloved characters and their adventures in a new and accessible way.

In the first six magazines, readers could enjoy the stories of characters such as Condorito, Washington, Yayita, Pepe Cortisona, and Doña Tremebunda. The second phase introduced additional characters like Yuyito, Genito, Cabellos de Ángel, and Tomate.

By September 2024, the complete set of twelve magazines was distributed free of charge to libraries and institutions serving blind and neurodivergent communities.

The goal of this initiative goes beyond creating a collectible item. “The objective is for these copies to be actively used so that people have real access to them,” explains Enrique Pérez de Prada, director of CECAT.

“This project demonstrates the power of culture as an inclusive tool that goes beyond access to information. It provides entertainment and education to those who have traditionally had fewer opportunities to engage with cultural expressions,” he adds.

With this innovative approach, “Condorito Inclusivo” ensures that Chile’s most famous comic reaches a broader audience, reinforcing the idea that culture should be accessible to everyone.
